Testimonials
It gives me immense pleasure to note that Dr. E.C.J. Augustine
wrote a book on Ashes to Arising: A Lenten walk into New life. I am much humbled and privileged for asking me to write this foreword. “Lent” has been an important place in Christian ecclesiological calendar and a much devotional season of Christian faith. Lent season consists 40 days, which begins every year with Ash Wednesday and ends with the Saturday before Easter, excluding all Sundays. Every year Ash Wednesday takes place in the month of February/March and Easter takes place in March/April. This year 2025, Ash Wednesday was on March 5th and Easter was on April
20th hence there were 7 Sundays after Ash Wednesday to Palm Sunday. Excluding these Sundays, remaining 40 days were considered as Lenten days. Christians are giving much importance during this season to spend their time in fasting prayers, divine meditations focusing on repentance, reconciliation, restoration, renovation, reformation, renewal, rebirth and so on. Some churches organize daily prayers and meditations on the sufferings, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It gives spiritual reawakening among Christians and inspire their devotional lives and motivate them to rededicate their lives.
Ashes to Arising: A Lenten walk into new life is the book containing 40 Christian devotional meditations leading the Christian life from Ashes to Arising that is from “Ash Wednesday” to the “Resurrection”. Ash Wednesday is symbolizing human life as “ash” and Resurrection is indicating arising to new life in Christ. Author has presented the forty themes in a meaningful way relating
excellently to the Lenten season, for example, on Ash Wednesday – the theme is related to “ashes” exploring the meaning of ashes; contemplating God’s redemptive love; embracing the Lenten journey; raised reflective questions for self examination of the devotees and finally concluding with the submission of a relevant prayer. The author adopted and applied same pattern to all the meditations. I really appreciate the author for selecting relevant themes and exposing the word of God biblically, theologically and
spiritually.
Dr. E.C.J. Augustine is a well known person to me not only as
my student but also as a good friend as well as a faithful Christian. He is well educated both in secular and theological education, who has sound Biblical knowledge and strong zeal in Christian Ministry. All these forty meditations he preached jealously during the last Lenten season. I listened his messages by online sources and spiritually nourished. Being as his teacher at his M.Div and D.Min studies at ACTC, I witnessed his literary and theological depth by guiding his research projects. He did research on “A search for inclusive pluralistic pastoral ministry to promote better inter-faith
relations” and submitted as thesis for his Doctoral of Ministry.
His thesis is recognized with distinction. He expressed genuine
thrust for a meaningful pastoral ministry in a pluralistic and multifaith context of India by reexamining the Luke’s Gospel and the Book of Acts. He framed all these meditations with such pluralistic spirituality and respect, which indeed gives spiritual nourishment to not only Christians but also non-Christians. I commend positively that this book will be in the hands of theological students, pastors and elders of every congregation to lead their meditations during Lenten days. It is my wish and prayer that our dear Lord would bless Dr. E.C.J. Augustine long life and good health to bring out many more useful devotional books in nearer future.
In a world that often prizes instant gratification and surface level engagement, the season of Lent invites us to something
deeper-a forty-day pilgrimage of reflection, sacrifice, and spiritual renewal that echoes Christ’s own preparation for His death and resurrection. In this collection of Lenten sermons, Dr. E. C. J. Augustine guides us on that path of repentance, renewal, and growth in Christ.
Dr. Augustine offers a distinctive voice in these meditations.
His doctorate in Biblical Theology grounds each sermon in faithful scriptural interpretation, while his extensive experience in the corporate world enables him to speak with clarity and relevance to the everyday struggles of modern believers seeking to live out their faith authentically.
These forty sermons are not mere theological reflections or
academic discourses. They are invitations-carefully crafted
messages that meet us where we are and gently direct us toward where God calls us to be. Each one weaves together biblical insight and practical application, offering wisdom that can be lived out in our daily lives.
For those approaching Lent with intentionality, this book will
serve as a faithful companion. Dr. Augustine bridges the gap
between biblical wisdom and contemporary discipleship, ensuring these meditations remain both spiritually rich and practically transformative.
As you read, expect not only to be informed but to be formed.
These messages invite us to experience Lent not as a mere season on the church calendar, but as a living journey into deeper Christlikeness.
Having had the privilege of knowing Dr. Augustine not only as
a scholar and teacher but also as family, I can testify personally to his integrity and the authenticity of the faith he proclaims. My prayer is that these sermons will guide you through your own forty-day journey, helping you encounter Christ with renewed devotion, clearer vision, and strengthened purpose.
